Trichloromethane (CHCl3) is an organic compound also known as chloroform. It is a colorless, transparent liquid with a special odor and sweet taste. It has a high refractive index and is non-flammable. Its density is greater than that of water and it is volatile. It is the product of three hydrogen atoms in the methane molecule being replaced by chlorine atoms. It is sensitive to light and reacts with oxygen in the air when exposed to light, gradually decomposing to produce highly toxic phosgene (phosgene) and hydrogen chloride. During storage, 1% to 2% ethanol can be added as a stabilizer. It is miscible with ethanol, benzene, ether, petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide and oils. Because of its unique physical and chemical properties, this compound is widely used in different fields such as industry and medicine.
