Application
Folding instead of phosgene as a carbonylation agent
Although phosgene (Cl CO Cl) has high reactivity, its highly toxic and corrosive byproducts pose significant environmental pressure and will gradually be phased out; DMC (CH3O-CO-OCH3) has a similar nucleophilic reaction center. When the carbonyl group of DMC is attacked by nucleophilic forces, the acyl oxygen bond breaks, forming carbonyl compounds, with methanol as the byproduct. Therefore, DMC can replace phosgene as a safe reaction reagent to synthesize carbonate derivatives, such as carbamate pesticides, polycarbonates, isocarbonates, etc. Among them, polycarbonate will be the area with the highest demand for DMC, It is predicted that over 80% of DMC will be used to produce polycarbonate in 2005;
Folding instead of dimethyl sulfate as a methylation agent
Due to similar reasons to phosgene, dimethyl sulfate (CH3O-SO-OCH3) also faces pressure to be eliminated.
